The Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) is located in central sub-Saharan Africa .With a population of around 105 million, the Democratic Republic of the Congo is, by area, the largest country in sub-Saharan Africa, the second-largest in all of Africa, and the 11th-largest in the world.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is widely considered one of the world's richest countries in natural resources. It has 70% of the world's coltan, a third of its cobalt, more than 30% of its diamond reserves, and a tenth of its copper. Cobalt is a strategic and critical metal used in many industrial and military applications. Due to the importance of cobalt for batteries for electric vehicles and stabilization of electric grids, the DRC could become an object of increased geopolitical competition. Recently, Chinese investment in the DRC and Congolese exports to China have grown rapidly.
The economy of DRC relies heavily on mining. Despite such vast mineral wealth, the DRC has suffered from political instability, a lack of infrastructure and corruption. DR Congo consistently has one of the lowest, nominal GDP per capita in the world. The DRC is also one of the twenty lowest-ranked countries on the Corruption Perception Index. The Second Congo War from 1998 to 2003 had involved nine African countries and around twenty armed groups. The DRC is still recovering from a series of conflicts that broke out in the 1990s.
