Malawi, officially the Republic of Malawi, became an independent nation in 1964. After three decades of one-party rule, the country held its first multiparty presidential and parliamentary elections in 1994.
Malawi’s economy is heavily based on agriculture. Its agriculture accounts for about one-third of GDP and 80% of export revenues. Its exported goods are cotton, peanuts, wood products and apparel. Its economic performance has been constrained by policy inconsistency, macroeconomic instability, poor infrastructure, rampant corruption, high population growth, the scourge of HIV/AIDS and poor education. Malawi is among the world's least-developed countries. Its economy has been dependent on substantial economic aid from the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and other countries.
