Nigeria, officially the Federal Republic of Nigeria, with an estimated 206 million inhabitants as of late 2019, is the most populous country in Africa and the seventh most populous country in the world. Owing to its large population, Nigeria's economy is the largest in Africa and the 24th largest in the world. Nigeria was a founding member of the African Union, and has tremendous influence in West Africa and Africa on the whole. It has been identified as a regional power on the African continent.
After independence in 1960, Nigeria continues to experience longstanding ethnic and religious tensions. Its politics were marked by coups and mostly military rule. In 1999, a new constitution was adopted and a peaceful transition to civilian government was completed. Nigeria is currently experiencing its longest period of civilian rule since independence.
The country has some of the world's largest deposits of coal, oil and gas. Nigeria has been marked as Africa's largest oil producer, and relies heavily on oil as its main source of revenue. Its economic development had been hindered by years of military rule, corruption, and mismanagement. The government continues to face the daunting task of institutionalizing democracy and reforming a petroleum-based economy. It is currently putting efforts to diversify into agriculture, telecommunications, and services. The restoration of democracy and subsequent economic reforms have successfully put Nigeria back on track towards achieving its full economic potential.
