List of prizewinners for the 2022 Singing Competition for Overseas Compatriot School Students and Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan released

    Jonathan Lee Hoe Yin wins the Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan category, is the sole winner of the NT$100,000 in prizemoney, and will appear at the National Day Party

The Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) 2022 Singing Competition for Overseas Compatriot School Students and Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan came to a successful end. In the Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan category, Jonathan Lee Hoe, from Malaysia and a student at Tainan National University of the Arts, was sole winner, taking away NT$100,000 in prizemoney and will appear at the National Day Party. The Overseas Compatriot School Student category was won by Malaysia's LIEW JIAN-XU of Pin Hwa High School, who won a US$3600 scholarship.

This year, the OCAC used technology to overcome obstacles caused by the pandemic to jointly hold the 2022 Singing Competition for Overseas Compatriot School Students and Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan with the Ministry of Culture and Hakka Affairs Council. The preliminary round used AI for selection. The grand final was held at Hana-space on the afternoon of September 17, and was attended by Vice Minister Roy Yuan-rong Leu, on behalf of OCAC Minster Dr.Tung Chen-yuan, who gave a speech in which he encouraged the new generation of overseas compatriot students to learn Mandarin through music. Guests in attendance included Chief Secretary of the Hakka Affairs Council Liao Yu-pei, Head of the Department of Cultural Exchange of the Ministry of Culture Gui Ye-chin, President of the Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre Ms. Sharon Ho Swee Peng, Director of the Department of Economic Affairs Syajaratud Abdullah, President of the Oversees Chinese Association HQ Lin Qi-guo, and President of the Federation Of Overseas Chinese Associations Zheng Zhi-yi.

This year's final categories included the Overseas Compatriot Students Studying in Taiwan Category and Overseas Compatriot School Student category; also, Taiwan Center for Mandarin Learning category student Paul Dawson sang and shared his thoughts about learning Mandarin. The event was livestreamed to the world to allow friends around the world to join in the grand occasion. The grand final this year had an impressive panel of judges, including Ting Hsiao-wen, Bing Wang and Eric Chen. The OCAC also specially arranged a surprise, inviting new generation singer Karfun Lee to perform onsite and share her singing competition experience, further enriching this year's competition.
