1. Objective
To improve the Chinese listening, speaking, reading, writing, and Chinese computer input abilities of overseas compatriot youths and increase their understanding of traditional Chinese culture and Taiwan’s diverse culture.
2. Classroom schedules
The program is Global Class for summer vacation.
Date:June 20th to July 29th, 2022, (6 weeks, 3 days per week, 2 hours per day, 36 hours in total).
Time: morning classes ( 9 am to 11 am Taiwan time) only.
3. Eligibility
Anyone aged 12 to 24 (age calculated to the first day of class of the program signed up for), holds a passport issued by his or her country of residence or a Taiwan passport with Overseas Compatriot Identity Endorsement, currently resides overseas, has strong desire to learn Mandarin. The eligibility descriptions are below:
Global Class: Anyone who wants to improve their Mandarin ability and learn about Taiwanese culture; an Overseas Compatriot Card needs to be held when applying for theprogram.
4. Course Contents
(1) Mandarin teaching.
(2) Chinese computer input techniques and network application classes: The classes will use Overseas Community Affairs Council (OCAC) "Huayuworld.org" resources and activities, allowing students to learn Mandarin and Chinese computer input methods through class activities.
(3) Cultural Classes, Exploration in Taiwan and Introduction to Taiwan’s high-tech industry: As well as language, cultural classes will be provided. For Cultural Classes, the classes include calligraphy, paper art, oriental mask painting, and cultural tours. (every batch will offer the aforementioned four classes and students can choose at least one according to their interest; Exploration in Taiwan will be Augmented Reality tours (four activities each batch from which students can choose,) to allow students to learn about Taiwan’s culture through technology; for Introduction to Taiwan’s high-tech industry, an introductory film will be shown to give students a deeper understanding of Taiwan’s technological development.
(4) Enrollment lecture:
I.There will be an area on the exclusive website for introducing the admission channels for studying in Taiwan (e.g. University Entrance Committee for Overseas Chinese Students), types of universities in Taiwan, academic subjects and career choices, to establish a preliminary understanding of study environment in Taiwan.
II.To encourage students to study in Taiwan and increase their understanding of the study environment, the undertaking units will invite students studying in Taiwanese
universities to share their experience of studying in Taiwan online.
(5) TOCFL Lecture: To encourage students to take the Test of Chinese as a Foreign Language (TOCFL), there will be a lecture about the TOCFL to let students know question types and usage of the TOCFL.
5. Special Features of the Study Program
(1) The program is intensive and designed to improve students' Mandarin listening, speaking, reading, writing, and computer Chinese input abilities.
(2) The program includes online Mandarin simultaneous classes (maximum of 5 students for 1 teacher), and asynchronous online self-study and review classes.
(3) The program is small class-based. All participants are required to take a test of the TOCFL Speedy Screening System after registration and will be placed in different classes at different levels. The program is suitable for students equipped with a certain level of Mandarin.
(4) For the regional classes, the program is taught in the native language of each country, and is suitable for those students who have never learned Mandarin.
(5) After the program, the OCAC will provide rewards for the top 10% of students in each class as encouragement.
6. Application Procedures
(1) Registration date: from now until 2 weeks before class starts or class is full.
(2) Registration method: please fill in the registration form, sign an OCAC notification regarding personal information of participants in the 2022 language study program, and attach an ID photo and a copy of the passport information page. 7. Important Notices
(1) Students should prepare a computer, internet and headset
(2) The fee for this program will be borne by the OCAC, during the program, students must abide by the regulations. If there are major violations, the OCAC may expel violators according to the regulations.
(3) Students are required to attend at least 80% of hours of Mandarin simultaneous classes (excluding the opening and closing ceremonies). The organizer will issue an electronic Certificate of Completion in Mandarin and in English to those students who complete and pass the program.
