Myanmar, officially the Republic of the Union of Myanmar and also known as Burma, is a sovereign state located in the Southeast Asian region. Myanmar is bordered by India and Bangladesh to its west, Thailand and Laos to its east and China to its north and northeast. To its south, about one third of Myanmar's total perimeter of 5,876 km forms an uninterrupted coastline of 1,930 km along the Bay of Bengal and the Andaman Sea. The country's 2014 census counted the population to be 51 million people. Myanmar is 676,578 square kilometers in size. Its capital city is Naypyidaw, and its largest city and former capital is Yangon (Rangoon). .
The provisional results of the 2014 Myanmar Census show that the total population is 51,419,420. Myanmar is ethnically diverse. The government recognises 135 distinct ethnic groups. There are at least 108 different ethnolinguistic groups in Myanmar, consisting mainly of distinct Tibeto-Burman peoples, but with sizeable populations of Tai–Kadai, Hmong–Mien, and Austroasiatic (Mon–Khmer) peoples.
The Bamar form an estimated 68% of the population. 10% of the population are Shan. The Kayin make up 7% of the population. The Rakhine people constitute 4% of the population. Chinese ethnic form approximately 3% of the population.
It is estimated that there are about 2 million overseas Compatriots in Myanmar, most of them live in Yangon, Mandalay, Lashio, Myitrona, Taunggyi, and they form associations based on society, culture, education, religion. There are about 400 people are from Taiwan. Most of them live in Yangon. The main business they operated including Import and export trade, construction, groceries, food processing, restaurants, textiles, chemicals, hotels, transport etc. In addition, overseas compatriots in general take education affairs of the next generation particularly seriously. In the hope of promoting traditional Chinese characters and Taiwan’s diverse cultural learning, there are 191 overseas compatriot schools in Myanmar in close collaboration with the OCAC to pass down the important cultural heritage of mankind.
