Taipei, Sept. 29 (CNA) A joint venture set up by Taiwan-based wire and cable supplier Walsin Lihwa Corp. and Denmark's NKT HV Cables broke ground Thursday on a factory that will be the first in Taiwan to produce submarine cables.
The joint venture, called Walsin Energy Cable System Co., is investing NT$10 billion (US$311 million) in the underseas cable plant in Kaohsiung, with construction expected to be completed in 2025 and mass production expected to start in 2027, Walsin Lihwa said.
According to the Taiwanese company, the partnership with NKT, one of the three biggest cable makers in the world, will enable Walsin Lihwa to introduce sophisticated undersea cable manufacturing technologies in Taiwan and advanced operating models.
Located in the phase one area of the Kaohsiung Intercontinental Container Terminal, the submarine cable plant is being built on a site with an area of 233,888 square meters and will have 59,828 square meters of floor space.
The plant will be able to produce high-voltage cables for offshore wind turbine power generation, the company said.
"Local production ensures a steady supply of submarine cables, a critical component for the development of the offshore wind power industry and of strategic importance to Taiwan's grid resilience," Walsin Lihwa Chairman Chiao Yu-lon (焦佑倫) said in a statement.
"Our collaboration marks a significant milestone in the development of Walsin Lihwa's power cable business," Chiao said.
At the groundbreaking ceremony, Chiao thanked the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) for its efforts on offshore wind development and said his company will work closely with the agency to build a strong supply chain in the field.
In the statement, Will Hendrix, NKT's COO and deputy CEO, said the project was important to his company, and he hoped that NKT and Walsin Lihwa will continue to cooperate given that Taiwan's offshore wind market is expected to grow rapidly over the next 10 years.
Founded in 1966, Walsin Lihwa is an industrial conglomerate that has interests in wires and cables, stainless steel, natural resources, real estate development, renewable energy and electronics.
It has a workforce of more than 10,000 people in Taiwan, China, the United States, Italy, Malaysia and Indonesia.
