According to ancient records, Mainland Chinese immigrants migrated to the Korean peninsula during the Shang-Zhou Era three thousand years ago. Most of those early immigrants have now assimilated into Korean society. Originally from the Shandong Province of mainland China, the modern overseas compatriot associations began to form in the late 19th century. The population of Taiwan's compatriot community in Korea is around 16,000 people.
The descendants of overseas compatriots who immigrated to Korea before 1949 are called R.O.C. (Taiwan) nationals in Korea because they still maintain R.O.C. (Taiwan) nationality and identity. Their successful residencies in Korea help promote the Taiwanese image as that of a competent grassroots ambassador. The overseas compatriot community in Korea helps play an increasingly important role in public diplomacy. In addition to modern Taiwanese settlement in Korea, the R.O.C.(Taiwan) Government does further work to ensure a meaningful, close connection with overseas compatriots in Korea. Some efforts include:
1.Organization: There are more than 40 overseas compatriot Associations which are tasked with managing the registration database of R.O.C.(Taiwan) nationals in Korea. The presence of other Taiwanese-Korean-minded professional associations also helped to strengthen the overseas compatriot community in Korea.
2.Education: The overseas compatriot community in Korea established 4 high schools and 11 primary schools. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) Government provides educational materials and assistance for strengthening Traditional Chinese Characters and cultural education in Korea.
3.Business: Many overseas compatriots are engaged in fields like Chinese Food Restaurants, Travel Agencies, Traditional Korean medicine hospitals etc. Furthermore, many excellent young overseas compatriots in Korea are hired as high-level managers or CEOs by large Korean enterprises. The R.O.C. (Taiwan) Government also provides overseas compatriots with various training courses to assist them in developing their professional skills.
4.Career: overseas compatriot high school graduates are encouraged to proceed with higher education in Taiwan. They are educated with a special focus on multilingual ability and international view through R.O.C.(Taiwan) government programs. Studying in these Taiwanese programs help set up young overseas compatriots for a career on the global stage.
