Madagascar, officially the Republic of Madagascar, is the island country lying off the southeastern coast of Africa. Since independence from France in 1960, it has close ties to France.
The country has many untapped natural resources, but is hampered by no capital markets, the shackles of the public administration, lack of legal certainty, poorly enforced contracts, and rampant corruption. The country is among the world's least-developed countries. Approximately 69 % of the population lives below the international poverty line.
The main economic resources of Madagascar are tourism, textiles, agriculture, and mining. The country is regarded as one of the world’s largest reserves of titanium, which can be used to produce strong, lightweight alloys for aerospace, military, industrial processes, and other applications.
